2012 Brisbane Junior Open
The 2012 Brisbane Junior Open was conducted at Wavell Squash Centre on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th May 2012. This was the 3rd and final selection event in the 2012 Oliver Brisbane Junior Selection Series with the previous two tournaments at Alexandra Hills and Sandgate.
The tournament attracted over 60 entrants and over 120 matches were played over Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday. Tom Calvert (Brisbane Region) and TJ Rarere (Southern Region), recent selections in the Australian Men’s Junior Team to play in the World Men’s Junior Championships in Qatar in July, played in the 19 Boys Age Group.
9 Boys: The 9 Boys finals were between 8 year olds Rubin McIntyre and Riley Spear both part of the Wavell Junior program. Ruben, the more experienced of the two by 6 months, won 11/5, 11/8, 11/1 with his usual pinpoint accurate serves.
Combined 9 and 11 Girls: Karissa Barclay (Wavell) defeated Siobhan Stephenson (Wavell) 4/11, 11/2, 11/7, 11/5 in a close fought final. Both these girls train together at Wavell and know each other’s games very well.
11 Boys: In another Wavell match-up Ethan Stephenson was too strong on this occasion for Campbell Jones winning 10/12, 11/6, 11/5, 11/4. These boys also train together and it will be no surprise to see them both bouncing into training on Tuesday.
Combined 13 and 15 Girls: Wavell’s Madison Satyasiv defeated Ashley Eyles from Palm Beach on the Gold Coast in a very close 5 game final 8/11, 11/8, 6/11, 11/8, 11/6. Both these 12 year old girls have bright futures.
13 Boys: Holland Park’s Nic Calvert, and Australian No.1 13 Boys, showed his class and defeated Wavell’s Lucian McIntyre 11/2, 11/5, 11/5
15 Boys: With Scarborough’s Alex Eustace playing up in the 19 Boys, Acacia Ridge pair Solayman Nowrozi and Jon van der Kreek fought out another close match in the 15 Boys Final. Solayman winning the 5 game final 11/7, 11/4, 9/11, 6/11, 11/5.
17 Boys: With Australian Junior team member playing in the 19 Boys the 17 Boys final was between the Gerandonis brothers Daniel and Konnar, also part of the Wavell Junior program. Both had tough semi finals to reach the final where the brothers didn’t give an inch to each other, with 15 year old Daniel defeating his 16 year old brother Konnar 11/8, 11/9, 14/16, 12/10.
Combined 17 and 19 Girls: Squash Australia Girls Talent Squad member Lakeesha Rarere from Southern Region defeated Scarborough’s AIS Scholarship holder Bethany Brazier in 5 tough games 14/12, 8/11, 11/7, 5/11, 13/11
19 Boys: Australia Junior team member TJ Rarere from Southern Region defeated Josh Stack-Masula, who plays for Sandgate on Tuesday and Wavell on Thursday, in another tough 5 game final 11/1, 6/11, 12/10, 8/11, 11/2. Josh had a great tournament defeating recently selected Australian Junior team member Tom Calvert in the semi final but TJ finished too strong in the 5th to win the 19 Boys final.
The Oliver Encouragement Award for the player who played in a great spirit of sportsmanship and also helped around the centre with refereeing etc was 10 year old Declan Cashman of Sandgate.
